Understanding Early Signs and Effective Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints. For many, the first symptoms of RA are experienced in smaller joints, such as those in the fingers, wrists, toes, and ankles. It’s common among people aged between 20 and 50, but can also occur in young children and older adults. Symptoms can be more severe in early-onset RA, and those starting after age 60 are categorized as late-onset RA.

According to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Network, the signs and symptoms of RA typically begin when someone reaches the age of 30, though it can take until their 60s to fully develop. Factors such as cigarette smoking can increase the risk of developing RA by as much as 2.4%. On World Arthritis Day 2023, awareness is being raised about the early signs of this disease, including morning stiffness and swelling, which are among the six early indicators.

Effective management of RA includes various strategies. Applying cold compresses to the affected joints can help reduce inflammation, while using a heat pad on the affected areas before bed or taking a warm shower or bath can be beneficial. Over-the-counter medications may also provide relief.

Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include tender, warm, swollen joints, and joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity. Fatigue, fever, and loss of appetite are also common. Stiffness, often one of the early signs of arthritis, may occur after prolonged sitting or activity, or upon waking up. This can lead to reduced mobility and can even restrict standing in severe cases.
