Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis: Causes, Symptoms, and Management Strategies

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease where the immune system erroneously attacks healthy tissue in the joints. This condition leads to inflammation, pain, and can affect other organs like the heart, lungs, nerves, eyes, and skin. RA differs from other arthritis types, which typically result from joint wear and tear.

Applying cold compresses to the affected joints can reduce inflammation. Using a heat pad on the affected areas before bed, taking a warm shower or bath before bedtime, and taking over-the-counter medications may provide relief.

Arthritis, characterized by joint swelling or inflammation, causes pain and stiffness. It affects over 180 million people in India, surpassing the prevalence of conditions like diabetes. Rheumatoid arthritis has a genetic predisposition; however, many at risk may not be aware of their susceptibility to severe rheumatoid arthritis. New biomarkers may aid in diagnosing severe cases.

RA can also impact the skin, potentially leading to nodules or tissue lumps underneath the skin, and sometimes a rash due to inflammation in or around blood vessels.
