Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Lifestyle Changes

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder impacting not just joints but potentially a variety of body systems, including skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels. Diagnosing RA involves a medical history review, physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging studies like X-rays or ultrasound.

Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis encompasses a multifaceted approach, including lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition therapy, medications, and in some cases, surgery. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, etc.) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) are commonly used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. However, these can have side effects such as stomach irritation, heart issues, and kidney damage. Prescription strength NSAIDs and steroids are also available options.

Importantly, there’s no cure for RA, but early and consistent treatment can significantly lessen symptoms and halt joint damage. Mayo Clinic emphasizes the importance of adhering to suggested treatments early in diagnosis to manage symptoms effectively.
