Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis Hand Deformities: Symptoms and Treatment Options

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that primarily affects joints. It can cause painful and debilitating deformities, particularly in the hands and wrists. This article explores the various aspects of hand deformities caused by RA, their symptoms, and the latest treatment options available.

One of the most visible effects of rheumatoid arthritis is the deformity it can cause in the hands. The image here shows extensive finger and hand deformity with contractures caused by RA. The damage is most notable at the metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP joints)—the joints at the base of the fingers.

Rheumatoid arthritis inflames the lining of your joints (synovium), leading to pain, swelling, bone erosion, damage to cartilage, and eventual deformity. The condition has several telltale symptoms, including pain, discoloration, stiffness, weakness, joint deformity, grinding, and nodule development.

Two unique signs of RA in the hands are fingers drifting away from the thumb and specific deformities such as the Boutonniere deformity (a bent middle finger joint) and the swan-neck deformity (a bent end of the finger and over-extended middle joint). These deformities are indicative of the progression of the disease.

Treatment for RA hand deformities includes a combination of medication, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. The goal of treatment is to manage pain, reduce inflammation, and improve joint function. Preventative measures and early treatment are crucial in managing RA effectively.
