Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis in Men: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease primarily affecting the joints and causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in movement. While RA is more commonly diagnosed in women, men are also susceptible to this condition. In men, rheumatoid arthritis can be influenced by a greater genetic predisposition, meaning a higher genetic burden might be necessary to trigger the disease compared to women.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that potentially impacts various body systems, including skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels. The condition is not exclusive to joints alone. Men with RA may experience more severe genetic factors, as suggested by experts like O’Dell.

Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, causes joint pain and stiffness, often worsening with age. It is essential to differentiate between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, as they are distinct in symptoms and treatment.

The typical age range for RA symptoms is between 30 and 60 years, with men less likely to be diagnosed before age 45. The median age of onset for both genders is 58 years. RA can be classified as young-onset rheumatoid arthritis (YORA) or later-onset rheumatoid arthritis (LORA), with basic symptoms and treatments being similar across ages.

Diagnosing RA can be challenging in its early stages due to the similarity of its symptoms with those of other diseases. There isn’t a singular blood test or physical finding that can conclusively diagnose RA.
