Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that primarily affects your joints, but it can also affect other parts of the body, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels. It is an autoimmune disorder, meaning that your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body’s tissues.

The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age. In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system targets the lining of the joints, causing painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity. Unlike the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.

Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include tender, warm, swollen joints, and joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after periods of inactivity. Other common symptoms include fatigue, fever, and loss of appetite.

RA affects more females than males, and female hormones may play a role in the onset and fluctuation of the disease. This is particularly notable during periods such as pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, menopause, and in conditions like endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Hormonal medications can also impact the symptoms of RA.

Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis focuses on controlling symptoms and preventing joint damage. It may include medications, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. Early, aggressive treatment is key to good results.
